Spirit of the Outback Rail Journey to Longreach

Depart Brisbane on the Spirit of the Outback and enjoy Queensland's colourful & rugged outback in air-conditioned, authentically-themed surrounds. Your journey takes you north to Rockhampton and then west through mining and rural towns of Blackwater, Emerald and Barcaldine.

Day 2 - Sunday (D)
Arrive Longreach; Welcome Tour & BBQ

Arrive via the Spirit of the Outback into Longreach and enjoy a welcome tour. Take pleasure in some leisure time after your rail journey, and then join us on our welcome BBQ. Overnight Longreach

Day 3 - Monday (B, L, D)
School of the Air; Agricultural College; RM Williams Heritage Gardens; Qantas Museum

Discover the challenges of teaching over the airwaves at The Longreach School of the Air. Explore the Australian Agricultural College, dedicated to the training of practical people for the rural industry. Soak up the Hall of Fame Cottage and RM Williams Heritage Garden's Tour. Learn of the Legends and the unsung heroes at The Stockman's Hall of Fame.

See national treasures such as the original hangar and the amazing artefacts bring alive the early culture of one of the world's first airlines telling the Qantas story at the Qantas Founders Outback Museum. Savour sunset nibbles and happy hour drinks under the wing of aviation history before dinner. Overnight Longreach

Day 4 - Tuesday (B, L, D)
Winton; Carisbrooke Station; Cory's Range; Dinosaur Tracks; Waltzing Matilda Centre

Departing for Winton, past vast open plains and Coolibah lined creeks. Our day takes us into the dramatic change in scenery as we leave the township of Winton. Embarking on the northern remnant of the Gonnaway Plateau, we discover Carisbrooke Station's colourful Cory's Range, a breath-taking, dramatic drive, featuring a private pristine wilderness experience, brilliant colours with views of over 700sq miles of country.

Enjoy lavish country catering for lunch reflecting on the morning's contrasting country. Amongst the eroded edge of the Tully Range, let us take you on a journey into the cretaceous period- a time when dinosaurs ruled. See their tracks: the only recorded dinosaur stampede in the world - over 3,300 footprints. Mid afternoon we return to Winton to learn the legend at the multi-award winning Waltzing Matilda Centre. Day 5 - Wednesday (B, L, D)
Longway Station; Longreach Saleyards; Ilfracombe; Wellshot Hotel; Drovers Dinner Cruise

Discover the challenges of station life this morning at Longway station, 15,000 acres of real Australian outback. Experience this contrasting environment and its inhabitants to the vibrant Longreach saleyardsÐone of the largest cattle selling centres in Queensland. Travelling on to Ilfracombe we retrace the historical stock routes and we step back in time to evidence of the Eromanga Sea Ð approx 90 million years ago.

Learn the secrets of the Ilfracombe landscape and township through discoveries in the Folk and Transport Museum and the over 100 year old Wellshot Hotel. Leisure time in Longreach before re-joining in the afternoon to soak up a spectacular outback sunset with the Drover's Dinner. Enjoy a one way cruise on our timeless waterhole and majestic flood plains as the colours fade into starry outback skies. Take in sunset bites and antipasto platters in our select sunset location before our journey is heightened on arrival into our exclusive outback, white linen dining experience. Sit back and be charmed by our outback entertainers, whilst experiencing the traditional flavours of camp oven cuisine. Overnight Longreach.
