Departing on our luxury ‘Gold Class’ coach from Brisbane CBD, we travel south to Kingscliff for a morning tea break. We then continue on to enjoy lunch on the banks of the Clarence River in Maclean before arriving in Port Macquarie.
Over 8000 koalas are feared to have perished in NSW alone since the beginning of the bushfire crisis in September 2019. The bushfires in and around Port Macquarie in November 2019 devastated the genetically diverse koala population with as many as 350 koalas killed and approximately 75% of the fireground footprint being prime koala habitat. Today we visit the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital who have raised more than $6 million and are using the funds to distribute automatic drinking stations to burnt areas, sharing the funds with other wildlife organisations in fire affected regions, and establishing a wild koala breeding program. In this very special guided visit we meet some of the patients and their amazing caregivers before donning our gardening gloves. To aid in the recovery of the koala population it’s time to get planting as we help to re-establish the hospital’s 253 acre plantation of recognised koala food trees.
We start today making the short drive south to Laurieton, where we break for a cuppa at the North Brother Lookout. After taking the coast road back to Port Macquarie, we join a scenic lunch cruise on the Hastings River. Our flat bottomed boat allows us to meander amongst the oyster farms and enjoy the wildlife along the shore, in the sky and in the water. This afternoon we take in a visit to the Glasshouse Regional Gallery, which features contemporary, indigenous, historical, and traditional artworks.
This morning we start making tracks for home breaking in picturesque Coffs Harbour for morning tea, and then continuing on to historic New Italy. After lunch in the café there’s time to discover the museum complex which is dedicated to the original Italian farmers who settled in the area. We return to Brisbane later in the afternoon.
