Travel to beautiful Bargara Beach and the Mon Repos turtle rookery which supports the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region. Take a ranger guided tour of the beach to see turtles nesting or hatching, enjoy the sights of Bundaberg and spend a full day on Lady Musgrave Island on the outer Southern Great Barrier Reef.
8th February 2019
Departing from Brisbane Transit Centre, we travel north, stopping for a cuppa in Gympie before heading on to Hervey Bay for lunch and a stroll along the esplanade shops. Our destination today is Bargara Beach, where we will have the best location to see the Mon Repos turtle encounter. Enjoy a restful afternoon before tonight’s encounter. Mon Repos beach comes alive after dark where we can see tiny hatchlings emerge from the sand and scurry back to the sea. Whilst waiting for the turtles or hatchlings we visit the Mon Repos Interpretive Centre and browse through the shop and take in the ranger shows and videos presented in the amphitheatre. N.B. If turtles are scarce you may have to wait for two or more hours before going onto the beach. Please also be aware that turtles are wild marine animals and we cannot guarantee you will see either nesting turtles or hatchlings. Our evening tour has limited light and no torches are allowed and access to see the turtles is by walking on soft sand.
3 Night Stay: Kelly’s Beach Resort, Bargara Beach
**Please note: Accommodation is village style and is budget 3 star villas. We have chosen this accommodation for its proximity to Mon Repos.
A later start to today with a sleep in and leisurely breakfast, before we board the coach to visit Ohana Cider House and Tropical Winery for a talk and tasting of their tropical fruit wine, cider and liqueur. After whetting our tastebuds, we take a seat by the water to enjoy our lunch at Grunske’s by the River before taking time to wander the city Botanic Gardens. Free time this afternoon to shop in the city centre, or for general sight-seeing before returning to the resort in the afternoon, for a rest or a swim in the pool before dinner.
A vast, calm, turquoise lagoon like one big swimming pool with white sandy coral beaches completes the picture of Lady Musgrave Island and Coral Lagoon. The largest true coral cay on the outer Southern Great Barrier Reef and one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. The island is set on 3000 acres of living reef with a 1000 acre calm coral lagoon that is unique to the entire Great Barrier Reef. Our full day reef experience includes a glass bottom boat cruise with 6 metres of coral viewing, a guided island walk and snorkelling (equipment provided) with tropical fish, turtles and more.
**As travel to Lady Musgrave Island takes just over 2 hours and is an open ocean passage, we strongly recommend that all passengers take sea sickness medication as a precaution. Please seek medical advice prior to departure.
Homeward bound this morning, we break at the historic Paragon Theatre in Childers for morning tea, historical talk and short film. Back on the road, our next stop is at the historic Hideaway Hotel in Tiaro where we enjoy a BBQ lunch before returning to Brisbane Transit Centre on Roma Street late afternoon.
