Departing Brisbane on our luxury ‘Gold Class’ coach we travel south along the Pacific Highway crossing the Tweed River into New South Wales, then breaking at Kingscliff for morning tea. Continuing south, we travel through the picturesque Northern Rivers to the pioneering district of New Italy, an area settled by Italian immigrants in the early 1880s. This afternoon takes us through Coffs Harbour, before finishing our day at the coastal town of Port Macquarie.
Our first stop today is Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, the largest remaining coastal rainforest reserve in New South Wales. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the elevated rainforest boardwalk through pristine subtropical rainforest. We then travel to Timbertown, an entire village re-created to demonstrate the struggles and achievements of our pioneers. It’s an authentic heritage township, where the horse and carriage still runs, timber is still sawn, and the bullock team still hauls it’s heavy load. You’ll smell the distinctive aroma from the steam engines, the smell of sawn timber and the smell of home style cooked meals. We’ll take in an authentic 1880’s style cook up for lunch. We have time this afternoon to sample the goods at the Fudge Factory, before heading back to our hotel.
Our travels today take us to South West Rocks and the ruins of the Trial Bay Gaol for a 1 hour guided tour. This piece of Australian history combines haunting tales with visually stunning scenery. Afterwards, we continue on to Macksville and the historic ‘Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage’ to discover antiques and memorabilia from the turn of the century. Next, we travel the Nambucca Valley to Taylors Arm and the well-known ‘Pub With No Beer’. Enjoy a BBQ lunch and good old-fashioned hospitality in this quirky venue, named after the story of the time it was cut off by a flooding Kempsey River and no beer could get through. After lunch we return to the hotel and take some time to enjoy the views of the Hastings River on an afternoon at leisure.
This morning we visit the Koala Hospital in the grounds of the Macquarie Nature Reserve for a ‘Feed, Walk & Talk’ tour. This hospital was inundated with injured koalas after the recent bushfires that affected the nature reserve. Learn about how the hospital and its volunteers are working hard to restore the area by replanting the Eucalypt trees that feeds the species. Late morning it’s “all aboard” on a cruise discovering the Hastings River, accompanied by a Devonshire morning tea. Relax and unwind as we explore the tranquil waters in Port Macquarie, often seeing dolphins, turtles, osprey and sea eagles. This afternoon, take time to discover Port Macquarie itself with time to browse the various shops, grab a coffee or sundowner drink.
This morning we make our way to the town of Kempsey where we visit the Wigay Aboriginal Culture Park. Learn about Australian AboriginalCulture and some of the traditional uses of native plants for building, medicine, food and other ancient uses, that have been passed on through the generations. Enjoy a fresh fire baked morning tea of lemon myrtle billy tea and damper served with native jams. Next, we spend some free time in Kempsey before meeting for lunch. It wouldn’t be a trip to Kempsey without a visit to the iconic Slim Dusty Centre. This visually rich and astonishingly varied display provides a look into Slim’s first steps into show business and the early years adventures touring the towns and villages of Australia’s outback. Take time to wander through the information centre, the exhibition gallery and the gift shop which showcase products from the local region. Making our way back to Port Macquarie, we stop at Ricardoes Tomatoes, a state-of-the-art computer controlled two-acre farm containing greenhouses that aid in the production of high quality, hydroponically grown tomatoes and strawberries. Grab a bucket and head into the greenhouse to hand pick your own vine-ripened produce to take home.
This morning we start making tracks for home, breaking in picturesque Coffs Harbour for morning tea. Afterwards we continue our travels north and stop for lunch in the seaside town of Yamba. We lunch in a hotel etched into the escarpment, which provides us with sweeping 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. After lunch, we return to Brisbane late in the afternoon.
