Itinerary (Flight to Hobart - Flight Home)

Day 1    Sunday (D) Hobart

We fly into Hobart to meet our coach captain and head to historic Richmond, home to the picturesque sandstone bridge over the Coal River. Built in 1825 by convict labour, this heritage-listed bridge is the oldest of its kind in Australia. We take time for a stroll before we return to Hobart and check-in.

Day 2    Monday (B,L,D) Port Arthur

Today we visit Port Arthur Historic Site, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Australian Convict Sites. Embark on a guided walking tour of this former seaside penal colony, where we explore more than 30 restored buildings and ruins. Learn about the history of the settlement which dates back to the 1830s, and the brutal living conditions for the convicts. We then set off on a 30-minute cruise on Carnarvon Bay to admire the natural beauty of this sombre site. From the water, admire the scenery of Tasman National Park with its rugged coastline, see the Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen, and circle around the Isle of the Dead. We reboard our coach and travel back to Hobart via Eaglehawk Neck. Tonight we dine out, enjoying the vibrant maritime atmosphere and freshest Tasmanian seafood at the iconic Drunken Admiral.

Day 3    Tuesday (B,L,D) Bruny Island

Discover everything that makes Bruny Island amazing as we embark on a sightseeing and food tour. Enjoy a gourmet experience and taste local fresh produce, spot wildlife in their habitat, walk the beaches, climb The Neck lookout and tour the iconic Cape Bruny Lighthouse, perched above the stunning craggy Tasmanian coastline.

Day 4    Wednesday (B,L,D) Hobart

Merry Christmas! After a festive breakfast together, the morning is yours to relax and enjoy the facilities of our hotel or take a stroll along the waterfront. The highlight today is gathering for our Christmas Day lunch with all the trimmings. Enjoy a long sumptuous lunch with fresh Tassie delicacies, traditional fare and included beverages as we celebrate with friends old and new. A light dinner will be provided tonight at our hotel.

Day 5    Thursday (B,L,D) Strahan

Departing Hobart, we follow the Derwent Valley to historic New Norfolk and then continue on to ‘The Wall in the Wilderness’, an artistic work in progress which is slowly revealing the history of the harsh Central Highlands. After lunch we make our way further west stopping at the cascading Nelson Waterfalls. Further on we view the Iron Blow open cut copper mine and stop in at Queenstown before arriving in Strahan. 2 Night Stay: Strahan Village Motel, Strahan  

Day 6    Friday (B,L,D) Gordon River

Soak up the serene beauty of western Tasmania and relax in reserved premium seating as we cruise the mighty Gordon River. We pass natural landmarks like Hells Gates, which marks the entrance to Macquarie Harbour from the Southern Ocean, and visit Sarah Island, a former convict settlement and shipyard. Enjoy a smorgasbord lunch on board as we journey through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area before we return to Strahan for the afternoon. Tonight, we take in Australia’s longest running play ‘The Ship That Never Was’, a dramatic true story of an amazing escape and the extraordinary voyage of the last ship built at Macquarie Harbour’s convict settlement shipyard.

Day 7    Saturday (B,L,D) Cradle Mountain

Leaving Strahan, we step back in time and climb aboard the fully restored heritage carriages of the West Coast Wilderness Railway. We journey into the history of the wild west coast with our guide bringing stories of the railway and its resilient people to life. On arrival in Queenstown we enjoy a light lunch before travelling the Henty Road via Tullah to our hotel nestled in the alpine woodland of Cradle Mountain. 2 Night Stay: Cradle Mountain Hotel [star rating=4] 

Day 8    Sunday (B,L,D) Cradle Mountain

This morning we join a guided tour of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer’s Chalet and Dove Lake followed by lunch at the resort. This afternoon is at your leisure, perhaps visit the Wilderness and Landscape Photography Gallery, explore one of the many walking tracks or simply enjoy the resort facilities. Tonight, we take an animal spotting tour to see Tasmania’s nocturnal creatures in their natural habitat. Travel off the beaten track in a 4WD vehicle where wombats, pademelons, wallabies, possums, quolls and Tasmanian devils forage at night.

Day 9    Monday (B,L,D) Launceston

Today we travel to Burnie where we make a stop at Makers’ Workshop which showcases a dynamic community of artists and makers at work. We continue on travelling the scenic route to Ulverstone then Sheffield, the town of murals. Following lunch at Villaret Gardens, we marvel at the many sculptures on display as we pass through the historic town of Deloraine, before we finish our day at Launceston. 2 Night Stay: Country Club & Casino, Launceston  

Day 10    Tuesday (B,MT,L,D) Freycinet National Park

Travelling via the Swiss village of Grindelwald and Beaconsfield we arrive in Beauty Point where we have the choice of visiting the only Sea horse farm in the world or Platypus House. After lunch we take a tour of picturesque Launceston before arriving at Cataract Gorge where we take a ride on the world’s longest single span chairlift, enjoying spectacular views of this unique piece of urban wilderness. Tonight, there’s live entertainment and New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Country Club which will see us ringing in 2020 in style and with great company.

Day 11    Wednesday (B) Cataract Gorge

Happy New Year! Enjoy a sleep in this morning before we depart Launceston for Hobart travelling the midlands via Campbell Town taking time to follow the Convict Trail and see the convict built Red Bridge before heading to Ross. We then make our way to the airport for our respective flights home.
