Our flights arrive in Adelaide where we transfer to historic Mannum on the mighty Murray River. We enjoy lunch and some time to discover this town known as the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication. Mid-afternoon we board the PS Murray Princess and set sail downriver. This evening we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Mundurra. Keep an eye out for nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank and watch for kangaroos, hairy nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species. Later, the onboard entertainer provides music for the night owls.
3 Night Stay: PS Murray Princess
In 1879, the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, we join a guided tour of the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions before re boarding in time for lunch as we continue to cruise upriver. This afternoon, as we moor at Salt Bush Flat, we have the opportunity to inspect the wheelhouse with the Captain. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by the talented onboard crew.
This morning we take to the shore for a guided nature walk unearthing secrets of the local flora and fauna. Next, the PS Murray Princess departs for the big river gorges and 90 metre cliffs of the upper river. Just after Fromms Landing, we turn and head downriver to River View Lodge near Piggy Flat where our discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river and its amazing birdlife – watch for darters, herons and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. This evening we join the Captain and officers for predinner drinks at the Captain’s dinner and dance.
Returning to Mannum after breakfast, we say farewell to the grand lady of the Murray and make tracks for the Barossa Valley. Our first stop is the Barossa Reservoir with its ‘whispering wall’ and unique acoustic effects. We then arrive at Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop to learn about Maggie’s story and taste some of her delicious products, before discovering Barossa Sculpture Park at Mengler’s Hill with spectacular views over the valley. Later we enjoy a tour and wine tasting at the historic Chateau Yaldara before sitting down for lunch in Hermann’s Restaurant. We the continue on to Adelaide for the night.
1 Night Stay: Peppers Waymouth, Adelaide
This morning we board the mighty Indian Pacific checking-in to our Gold Service cabins. As we head east, watch as lush green pastures dissolve into tough mallee scrub on approach to Broken Hill. Early evening we arrive into this classic outback town known as ‘The Silver City’. Here we have the opportunity to visit the Pro Hart Gallery, Broken Earth Complex or Miners Memorial. Re-board in time for dinner and continue through the night towards Sydney.
1 Night Stay: Indian Pacific in Gold Service
We awake to views of the Blue Mountains then disembark at Mount Victoria to discover this picturesque region, known for its rugged landscape and dramatic scenery. We then make the final leg of our journey to Sydney Central by the regional passenger service. On arrival we take an orientation tour of Sydney including the famous Opera House, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and the Town Hall.
3 Night Stay: Park Royal, Darling Harbour
Today we join the Riverboat Postman, established in 1910, as it delivers mail and other essentials to the river access-only settlements on the Lower Hawkesbury River. All the skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives. Enjoy lunch on board and be entertained by the stories of the river whilst cruising in comfort up this spectacular waterway. On returning to Sydney the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.
This morning we encounter an authentic outback experience at Tobruk Sheep Station. Set on a high plateau over 150 acres above the Hawkesbury River, Tobruk is surrounded by state forests and bushland, with amazing views to the Blue Mountains. You will feel 1000 miles from anywhere but in reality you’re only 70 minutes from Sydney. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner cruise on iconic Sydney Harbour. Admire the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as we cruise the main harbour before disembarking at Darling Harbour.
Take some time for retail therapy at Harbourside in Darling Harbour before visiting the Justice and Police Museum. This historic complex of two courts and one police station is dedicated to telling the story of policing, crime and the courts in New South Wales. Our guided tour takes a look at the 19th century water police station and what it took to maintain law and order on Sydney’s waterfront in days gone by.
