A travel day today as we begin to traverse the western coastline, and journey between Broome and Port Hedland. We pass by the Eighty Mile Beach region, stopping for lunch, before arriving in the afternoon into Port Hedland.
A leisurely morning before we discover BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Nelson Point facility and see first-hand the operational side of this form of mining. We watch the bucket wheel reclaimers and ship loaders that dominate Port Hedland’s skyline, and gain a real understanding of Port Hedland’s mining industry. After lunch, we take a guided town tour visiting heritage sites and following the footsteps of the first European settlers.
We travel to Roebourne and take a short town tour of the historical buildings and stop for a leg stretch. Next, we lunch at Samson Beach before making a stop in the historic ghost town of Cossack. We take time to admire the views from the Tien Tsin lookout then discover the immaculately restored bluestone buildings of this region’s original port town. Heading to Dampier we stop by the Red Dog Memorial Statue for a photo opportunity, then see some of the projects of North West Shelf and the port loading facilities. Our day ends in Karratha, the heart of the West Pilbara coast.
A travel day today takes us south, moving slightly inland to the small town of Nanutarra, breaking here for lunch. Our afternoon takes us via Giralia Homestead, stopping here for a break before arriving late afternoon at Ningaloo, home to the stunning Ningaloo Reef, an UNESCO World Heritage listed area.
An exciting day as we embark on a three-hour, guided Eco Ningaloo Reeftour to view the turtles feeding in their natural surroundings. Experienced crew will provide their in-depth knowledge of the local turtle species and their behaviours, all from a purpose-built glass bottom boat. During our tour you will have the opportunity to view corals, feed fish and snorkel at two specially selected sites.
Back on the road we make our way to the seaside town of Carnarvon where we take a guided town tour discovering the Heritage Precinct and One MileJetty. We venture on to Shell Beach, a formation of billions of tiny shells, before we skirt the eastern side of Shark Bay to arrive in Monkey Mia.
Today we discover the waters of Monkey Mia and Shark Bay onboard the Shotover sailboat. You can lie back and relax or join in the fun of helping to sail the vessel. Experience the exhilaration of the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin, a dash of salt spray on your face and an ocean full of wildlife, all under silent sail. Our experienced crew are on hand to teach us about the local dolphins, sharks, dugongs, loggerhead and green turtles and stingrays. Take the afternoon at leisure, to recharge the batteries with a rest or an activity of your choosing.
We depart via the west coast of Shark Bay, stopping for a short photo opportunity at Eagle Bluff, one last chance to spot the wildlife from the elevated viewing platform. We re-join the coach to continue our journey south making our way through the Kalbarri National Park. We make a stop at Hawks Head to view the river gorges and magnificent wildflowers. From here we make our way onto the Kalbarri Skywalk lookout before arriving at our accommodation.
Leaving Kalbarri behind, we make a short stop at the amazing Pot Alley, a picturesque ocean gorge. Next, we pass by the world’s largest Garnet Mine before stopping at Hutt Lagoon showcasing a superb example of a pink lake. We take to the road again and arrive in Geraldton in time for lunch. This afternoon we embark on a town tour taking in HMAS Sydney Memorial and St Francis Xavier Cathedral.
Skirting the western coastline, we pass through Dongara and travel along the wildflower trail to Cervantes, breaking for a visit to Lake Thetis before enjoying lunch. Next, we explore the famous Pinnacles Desert, a diversity of wildflowers and living stromatolites. We arrive late afternoon in Perth.
After a relaxing start to the day, we board a ferry bound for Rottnest Island. We take in the unique fauna and flora, stunning beaches, woodlands and salt lakes with our local guide, and maybe even spot a quokka or two. We see the Wadjemup Lighthouse and Cathedral Rocks, ride the historic train and enjoy a break at the Rottnest Quokka ArmsPub before returning to the mainland.
