Discover Australia’s unique oil and gas industry history at The Big Rig. This interactive experience covers the early rig sites and machinery and delves into today’s multi-billion dollar industry. The Night Show Sunset Experience here is well worth booking.
Roma has a packed calendar of events throughout the year, with racing carnivals and garden and arts events. The Easter in the Country festival is an annual five-day event, choc-a-block with fun for the whole family, including a street parade, art, song, and poetry shows, a rodeo, mud derby and even goat races!

Over 400,000 cattle are moo-ved through Roma’s sale yards each year, making it the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Visitor tours run every Tuesday and Thursday at 8.30 am. There’s no need to book; meet out the front and follow one of the Akubra-sporting guides.
Take a self-guided walk past the town’s heritage buildings and beautifully landscaped CBD. You’ll also find a shopper’s delight with local specialist shops, boutiques, cafes and the Roma on Bungil Art Gallery. There are numerous places to eat in Roma, including takeaways, cafes and specialist steakhouses (this is the heart of beef country, after all).
It’s easy to get to Roma! The six-hour drive takes you up the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba, then on to the Maranoa region and into cosmopolitan Roma, the gateway to Outback Queensland. A one-hour flight is available from Brisbane. Train services to Roma are available aboard The Westlander between Brisbane and Charleville.
Roma’s semi-arid climate means summers are hot and dry, occasional thunderstorms relieve the heat, and winters are mild and pleasant with little rain. Autumn is a comfortable time to visit as temperatures start to drop gradually but are still warm (around 25°C to 30°C) and nights become cooler.
Roma is known for its rich agricultural heritage, being one of Australia's key cattle and farming regions. It is often referred to as the birthplace of the oil and gas industry in Australia due to the discovery of natural gas fields in the area. The town is also famous for its annual Easter in the Country festival, celebrating rural life with events, rodeos, and entertainment.
Roma is a five-and-a-half drive almost directly west of Brisbane.
