Kent Saddlery – quality outback leather

Meet the craftspeople of Queensland’s High Country

A man with a passion for quality

Kent Saddlery was founded by Lyle Kent who in his teens, worked on cattle stations in the 1960s. Lyle quickly realised the importance of having strong, reliable equipment when working with horses and the need for a saddle that would suit both horse and rider. Always interested in working with leather, he did repairs on the saddles and work gear which needed constant maintenance and his excellent craftmanship led to more opportunities for leatherwork.

When Lyle married Helen in 1972, they became farmers and he kept working with leather as a hobby, but in 1987 decided to learn all he could about saddlery. They started Kent Saddlery in 1988, travelling to cattle stations in western and northern Australia. In 2012 the Kent Saddlery shop opened in Stanthorpe. Reminiscent of an old-time saddlery store, visitors can see how these quality leather goods are made and buy from a stunning range.

A warm welcome awaits

The team at Kent Saddlery in Stanthorpe invites visitors to ‘Drop in, say g’day and smell the leather!’ Once inside you’ll feel like you’ve walked back in time as the shop resembles an old-time saddlery, but with a modern, gallery-style feel. Most of the leather products are carefully handcrafted in the Kent Saddlery workshop from in-house designs and are not available anywhere else.

For this Australian, family-owned business, it’s all about quality. With experience on cattle stations and a connection to the outback and country people, owners Lyle and Helen Kent, along with their children and extended families pride themselves on creating and sourcing the highest quality leather products in Australia.

A passionate partnership

Lyle and Helen have been supplying outback cattle stations with quality leather goods since 1988 and still take off for four months of the year in a custom-made truck shop to service the needs of their friends in the far reaches of western and northern Australia. Onboard is a range of Kent Saddles, leather gear, and other top-quality products.

As Lyle Kent says, “We’re excited about all that’s happening at Kent Saddlery and we’re thankful and blessed to have the loyalty and support of family, colleagues and customers.”
