The Big Rig in Roma

Learn Australia’s fascinating oil and gas history

Be intrigued by pioneering tales

Experience a slice of Roma’s history at Big Rig Roma Museum, a fascinating tribute to Australia’s history of oil and gas from its pioneers to the present day. Visitors choose from several tours, learning intriguing tales of tragedies, surprises, and dramas from when oil and gas first flowed in our country. There were plenty of trials and tribulations endured whilst these pioneers tried to strike it rich with Roma oil.

The story comes alive through exhibits, machinery displays, audio-visual features and local, knowledgeable ‘Roma Rigger’ guides. The exhibits cover the first discovery of petroleum through the boom-and-bust years of oil and gas exploration and how the lessons learned back then have helped shape the multi-billion oil and gas industry today. Big Rig Roma is a living history of oil and gas exploration and is well worth a visit.

Explore the surrounding area

Surrounding the museum is The Big Rig Parklands, open free to the public. Strolling through the parklands, you’ll discover Lenroy Slab Hut, built in 1893 from cypress pine. It’s now an interesting folk museum showing the reality of bush life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Roma Express is a miniature train that travels around the parklands. You can also find the Roma Visitor Information Centre at The Big Rig, as well as a charming café.
