Fraser Island (K’gari) Explorer Tour

Queensland’s number one bucket list experience

Sand, sea, rainforest, and lakes, in one day

Located 200km north of Brisbane, World Heritage-listed Fraser Island (now known by its traditional name, K’gari) is the largest sand island in the world and a Fraser Island Explorer Tour is one of the best ways to see it. Imagine white surf beaches, cliffs of coloured sands, ancient rainforests, fast-flowing creeks desert-like sand blows and crystal-clear freshwater lakes.

It’s a long, narrow island, in some places just one kilometre from the mainland. A place where you need to keep an eye out for dingoes and birds of prey. Where the beach is a highway for 4WD enthusiasts who arrive by ferry to camp and throw a line in for some of the best fishing in the world. And where visitors can fly in by light aircraft landing right on the beach!

Unpack once at our waterfront hotel in stunning Hervey Bay to discover whales, wilderness and much more. We’ll see these majestic creatures up close on a whale watching cruise, take a 4WD adventure on World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, taste Bundaberg’s famous rum at the distillery, ride the historic Mary Valley Rattler and visit the informative Hinkler Hall of Aviation as we delve into all this region has to offer.

Where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes

K'gari Explorer Tour (formerly Fraser Island Explorer Tour) is a one-day adventure through a World Heritage-listed wonder.

This off-road adventure will take you through tall rainforests with rare king ferns growing (amazingly) in the sand. You’ll drive along 120 kilometre beach, the island’s ‘beach highway,’ discover sheltered bays, and climb Indian Head to spot sharks, dolphins, stingrays, turtles, and schools of fish. You’ll learn the history of the Maheno Shipwreck, once a luxury cruise liner. The ship washed ashore in 1935 and is now one of the most photographed icons on the island.

Queensland’s number one bucket list experience

Take a cooling dip

On the tour, you’ll stop at Lake McKenzie - Fraser Island's famous swimming spot. Although the island is completely formed by sand and surrounded by salt water, it has more than 100 freshwater lakes, streams, and tributaries. Lake Mackenzie is one of the most beautiful on the island and its white silica sand shore and crystal-clear blue water invite you to wade in and cool down on a balmy Queensland day.
