Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tour

Growing the best pearls in the world

The journey of the Australian Southern Sea Pearl

Willie Creek Pearls is a family business of over 30 years, situated just 38 kilometres north of Broome in WA’s Kimberley region. Willie Creek Pearl Farm tours take visitors on the fascinating journey of the Australian South Sea Pearl - from shell to showroom – in their modern pearl farm. The pearl farm tour is a wonderfully interactive way to learn all about the industry that built Broome.

The tour starts in the hatchery, then it’s out to the bright blue waters of Willie Creek to view the oysters in their natural environment. Your tour host explains how pearl technicians seed and harvest the oysters to create the perfect, dazzling Australian Southern Sea Cultured Pearl. There’s a jewellery showroom where you can shop for a stunning souvenir of Australia’s pearl capital.

From shell to showroom

The Willie Creek Pearls story is an interesting one. The Banfield family moved to Broome in 1989, when Lord McAlpine, a British investor, author, and raconteur was transforming the town from a remote coastal town and pearling centre into a modern tourist destination.

The Banfields bought Broome Buslines and over many years grew it into a successful tour company offering coach tours throughout the Kimberley region. One of their tour destinations was Willie Creek Pearl Farm which they eventually bought.

With the courageous attitude inherent in pearl farmers of the past, the Banfield family have grown Willie Creek Pearls into an award-winning multi-purpose facility. Their inspiring, modern pearl farm welcomes thousands of visitors a year to discover the history and mystery of Western Australia’s fascinating pearling industry.
